How to Play Articulate!

Welcome to the official rules page for Articulate! - the fast-talking description game designed to turn any group into a loud, laughing competition of words, wit, and quick thinking.

This page covers the standard rules for Articulate! Classic and applies equally to UK and US play. House rules are welcome, but all players should agree on them before the game begins.

Object of the Game

Be the first team to travel all the way around the board and win a final CONTROL challenge on the FINISH segment. Teams progress by correctly guessing as many descriptions as possible within a 30-second turn.

Setup

  1. Unfold the board and place the arrow spinner in the centre.
  2. Divide players into teams of two or more. Fewer teams with more players work better than many small teams.
  3. Each team selects a playing piece and places it on the START segment.
  4. Decide by common agreement which team goes first.

Team Roles

Each turn, team members are split into DESCRIBERS and GUESSERS. There are never more than two describers, regardless of team size. All players must take turns being describers during the game.

Team SizeDescribersGuessers
2 players11
3 players21
4+ players22+

Advanced players may choose to use only one describer per turn, but this must be agreed before starting.

Playing a Turn

  1. Start the 30-second timer.
  2. The describers take the top card and describe the entry matching their piece's current segment. The START segment always begins with OBJECT.
  3. When a correct answer is guessed, take a new card and continue using the same category.
  4. When the timer ends, count the correctly guessed cards and move forward that many segments.
  5. Play passes to the next team - unless landing on a CONTROL or SPIN segment.

If a description rule is broken at any time, the entire turn is forfeited.

Description Rules

Forbidden

  • Saying the word itself or any derivative (e.g. post → postage, swim → swimmer)
  • Saying how many letters the word has
  • Saying what letter the word starts with
  • Using "sounds like" or "rhymes with" clues
  • Mouthing the word
  • Using foreign languages

Allowed

  • Gesticulating, miming, or acting
  • Passing once per turn instead of playing a card

Special Segments

CONTROL (White Segments)

When landing on a white CONTROL segment:

  • Play does not pass to the next team.
  • The same describers describe a CONTROL entry to all players - every team can guess.
  • There is no time limit.
  • The first team to shout the correct answer wins the next turn.
  • If two teams answer simultaneously, another CONTROL card is taken.

SPIN (Orange and Red Segments)

When landing on a segment that extends into the centre of the board, spin the spinner:

Spinner ResultBonus
Wide greenMove forward 2 segments OR move an opponent back 2
Narrow greenMove forward 3 segments OR move an opponent back 3
Orange or redNo bonus

If the arrow lands on a line, spin again.

Exception: CONTROL and SPIN effects only apply if the segment is reached by guessing descriptions correctly. If reached via a spinner bonus, no action is taken.

Finishing the Game

When a team reaches or passes the FINISH segment:

  • That team must attempt a CONTROL description to all players.
  • To win, their own teammates must guess it correctly first.
  • If they fail, they remain on FINISH and may attempt again on their next turn.
  • While waiting, other teams may move them backwards using SPIN bonuses.

Categories

Cards feature six categories corresponding to board segments:

Disputes and Adjudication

Arguments happen. That is part of the game.
